Ancient Wall of Jerusalem Unearthed

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

The Bible states that King Solomon built a wall around Jerusalem: “Now Solomon made a treaty with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and married Pharaoh’s daughter; then he brought her to the City of David until he had finished building his own house, and the house of the LORD, and the wall all around Jerusalem” (1 Kgs 3:1). Now a portion of that wall appears to have been excavated by archaeologists from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. This find dates from the tenth century B.C.E. (which corresponds to the Biblical dating of the reign of Solomon (1 Kgs 6:1). Continue reading

Tiger Woods Makes a Statement!

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

On Friday, February 19, 2010, Tiger Woods made a nationally televised statement in which he admitted his infidelity to his wife and family.

Immediately after his statement, media of all sorts began questioning his sincerity in his actions.  Did he mean it?  Or was he just sorry he got caught?  To such questions I say that only time will tell. Continue reading

In the News: Olympian Promiscuity

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

One of the definitions of the term olympian is “surpassing all others in scope and effect” (American Heritage Dictionary). This definition certainly applies to the sexual appetites of the athletes in the Olympic Village this week in Vancouver. Continuing the trend of recent Olympiads in Sydney (70,000) and Beijing (100,000), Canadian officials ordered and distributed 100,000 condoms to athletes for the Vancouver Olympics. That averages to 14 for each athlete. Continue reading

What Would They Say?

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

The Bible tells us about the intense persecution that was endured by early Christians. We know that many were imprisoned, and a large number were put to death (Acts 26:9-11). Uninspired historical accounts give us additional information about the terrible trials and sufferings of those first disciples. Continue reading

Wisdom Calls (Proverbs 16:3): Commit your works to the Lord

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Sometimes during worship, we cry out in song to God, “I need thee every hour!”

And then we go days without prayer, weeks without returning to worship and years without stopping to consider God’s will in the decisions we are making for ourselves. I need thee every hour? I act like I don’t need thee at all. Continue reading

Surgical Instrument Left Inside Woman

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

A sixty‑six year old woman in the Czech Republic complained of severe pain after surgery and requested an x‑ray but was told it would needlessly expose her to radiation. She finally prevailed and the x‑ray showed a foot‑long surgical instrument had been left inside her abdomen. She alleges hospital personnel tried to cover up the problem and is now seeking compensation. (“Foot‑long surgical tool left in woman’s abdomen”, Reuters). We will let others deliberate whether a cover up was involved. Continue reading
