Characteristics of a Soldier & Christian’s Life

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Memorial Day reminds us of our soldiers who died serving this country in war to keep us free from our enemies.

There are many similarities between the characteristics of the life of a soldier and that of a Christian in which he will be judged by a higher standard than himself.

This morning we would ask you to examine your life by the Uniform Code of God’s Justice, the Bible (John 12:48; Acts 17:11; 2 Cor. 13:5).

The Memorial Day of Christians

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

by Daniel H. King

May 30th is observed here in the United States as a legal holiday commemorating our service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. We must not forget that the freedom from tyranny and individual pursuit of life, liberty and happiness here in this wonderful land have come to us through the sacrifices of others. Memorial Day is a time set aside in our yearly calendar of events for reflection upon the greatest gift that another could ever give ‑ his life.

Lest we forget them, we pause from our daily chores to think about who they were and what they did. Then we go back to being who we are and doing what we do. But because they have a memorial… Continue reading

Faulty Religious Assumptions

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

by Jerry Fite

2 Kings 18:19-35 and Isaiah 3 give a record of the historical speech delivered by an Assyrian messenger named Rabshakeh. Judah was being seriously threatened by the Assyrians seven years after Israel had fallen to this ruthless foe. Sennacherib, king of Assyria, had sent his messengers to deliver a speech and letter to Hezekiah, king of Judah.

The speech and letter was an attempt to intimidate Judah to surrender with no resistance. The Assyrians were more concerned at this time with the threat posed by Egypt than that of Judah. After studying the speech and letter it is apparent that Sennacherib and Rabshakeh made three faulty assumptions about Jehovah and His people. These errors were critical and would cost many their lives.

Rabshakeh begins his defiant speech… Continue reading

What Adultery Is Saying

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

by Jerry Fite

This past week Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted not only adultery with a former house staff worker, but confirmed that he fathered a child by her over a decade ago. It was not the first time a public fig-ure admitted adultery, and sadly it will probably not be the last. But this sad infidelity allows us to consider what adultery is saying when a married man or woman goes outside of the marriage relationship to satisfy their desires.

You dig down deep to the root of all sin, and you will find it labeled selfishness. Especially is this true with the sexual sin of adultery. The man or woman already having a wife or a husband with whom the sexual desire can be satisfied, wants a momentary thrill… Continue reading

Turn The Other Cheek

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

by Jerry Fite

What do you think when you hear that Jesus said you were not to resist those who do you wrong; but whoever hits you on your right cheek, you are to turn to him the other also? Do you say Christianity is not for you, because you are not going to be pushed around by anyone? Do you conclude a Christian can do nothing to defend himself, but must let a person beat him at will?

Jesus did make such a statement in his famous sermon on the mount (Matthew 5:39). But did he literally mean you were to let someone beat you up, and you cannot protect yourself? Let’s see.

Jesus made his statement in the context of the Law of Moses which… Continue reading

Rupturing the Rapture

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

by Joe R. Price

“The end of the world is almost here! HOLY GOD will bring judgment day on MAY 21, 2011.” So says the lead caption of a pamphlet distributed by Family Radio, headed by Harold Camping, Oakland CA. He teaches that the church age ended in 1988 and “the beginning of the great tribulation must have occurred on May 21, 1988” (Harold Camping, “We are Almost There!”, p. 48). Through elaborate convolution and perversion of Biblical passages, Camping has devised a timeline for the end of the world. (He has done so to his own destruction, 2 Pet 3:16‑17.) He says the end of the “great tribulation” will be May 21, 2011. Camping summarizes with this declaration: “Thus, we must understand that God is definitely declaring that He… Continue reading
